About Poole Harbour Site of Special Scientific Interest

Poole Harbour Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) encompasses one of the largest natural harbours in Europe, located on the southern coast of England in Dorset. Covering extensive intertidal and marine habitats, it spans shallow waters, mudflats, salt marshes, reed beds, and small islands. Its geography supports a variety of rare and protected species and is recognized under multiple conservation designations including Ramsar and Special Protection Area (SPA) status. The harbour’s estuarine environment is an important breeding and feeding ground for internationally significant populations of migratory and overwintering birds such as avocets, black-tailed godwits, and brent geese. The surrounding landscape includes heathland and coastal woodlands, adding to the ecological diversity. Historically, the harbour has been used for navigation, fishing, and salt production, and today it remains a vital hub for sailing and paddle sports, as well as walking and birdwatching. Notable landmarks include Brownsea Island, which is managed by the National Trust and home to rare red squirrels, and Sandbanks Peninsula, famous for its sandy beaches and luxury waterfront estates. Visitor appeal centers on wildlife observation, waterside recreation, and tranquil nature immersion, with several walking routes and wildlife hides accessible around the harbour edges. The area’s tidal rhythms and varied terrain offer a rich outdoor experience for both casual day visitors and dedicated naturalists.
